Freshman students present their work in the Transitions I Showcase.

We believe students “grow by doing” through undergraduate research and creative projects, community-engaged work, internships, student athletics and activities, and other integrative, hands-on work.

What is the benefit of project-based work for students?

Doing projects offers a student experience beyond just declaring a major. Through project-based work, students graduate with more than just a diploma and a transcript of classes. Students will leave the University and announce to the world: “Look what I’ve done!”

Additionally, working on projects emphasizes the connections between people—faculty, staff, other students, community partners, alumni—and among different disciplines and activities, creating a “whole” and unique experience for each student.

What constitutes a “project”?

Projects come in all shapes and sizes, from the more traditional to the wildly experimental. They are found not only embedded in single courses but also extending over several semesters, both inside and outside the classroom. Engaged students—from their classrooms and laboratories to co-curricular activities and service learning—are encouraged to explore, to try out, to share, even to fail, as they pursue their ideas in a multitude of projects from scientific research to creative performances.

Will every student complete a project?

Students present their work in the Transitions I showcase event. Every student will work on projects while at Emory & Henry. Students will be introduced to the concept of project-based learning in their CORE 100 course, and projects will be an integral approach to learning in other core courses and in majors and minors. Some students’ work may culminate in a major project; other students may work on a series of projects that represent their endeavors.

Why is project work important?

Hands-on work is a high-impact practice. Research shows that students learn more in engaged-learning environments, and project work teaches “soft skills” such as leadership, collaboration, perseverance, and resilience. Finally, we know that students who engage in project-based work usually perform better in school and stay in school longer.

He explored the mysterious prejudices between Dominicans and Haitians, working to define racism on an island where white european descent has for a long time been the minority.</p></div>

<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Rachel ’19 Publishes work on Sexualization of Female Athletes</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> Politics major and student athlete Rachel Smoot ’19 recently published an article in the <em>Augsburg Honors Review: A Multidisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship.</em> </p><p> Rachel wrote the first draft of the article, “Olympic Athletes or Beauty Queens? The Sexualization of Female Athletes,” was written in Dr. Sarah Fisher’s POLS 337: Women & Politics class. </p><p> The abstract for the article is included below. Congrats, Rachel! </p><p> </p><p> “The Olympic Games is one of the most watched sporting events in the modern<br/> era. The games provide a highly publicized international stage where the<br/> competitors are representatives of their country. Media outlets present a visible<br/> discourse in the way male and female representatives are portrayed (Messner,<br/> Duncan, Jensen. 1993). While male athletes are applauded for their strength,<br/> agility and skill, female athletes are sexualized. From the midriff baring<br/> bikinis of beach volleyball to the leggy leotards of gymnastics, women’s<br/> entertainment value stems from the sexualization of their bodies instead of<br/> their athletic abilities (Kane, M. J. 1996). While male uniforms most often<br/> favor longer shorts and baggy t-shirts, female uniforms usually consist of<br/> tight-fitting leotards, spandex, short dresses, or skirts. In addition to providing<br/> entertainment value, these uniforms ensure that female athletes adhere to<br/> societal norms regarding what a woman “should” look like. Despite engaging<br/> in the exact same physical activity as their male counterparts, female athletes<br/> are expected to appear feminine. On the world’s most public stage, these<br/> female athletes are treated more as models than fierce competitors.” </p></div>
<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Women & Politics works with the YWCA TechGYRLS </h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> </p><p><picture><img width="468" height="351" alt="Dr. Fisher's Women & Politics class working with the YWCA TechGYRLS in Bristol, TN" src="https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/gid/20/width/468/height/351/1546_techgyrls2017.jpg" class="lw_image lw_image1546 lw_align_left lw_block" data-max-w="468" data-max-h="351" loading="lazy"/></picture></p><p> The Spring 2017 POLS 337 Women & Politics class at Emory & Henry College worked with students and community members on the steps to eliminate bullying by offering Bystander Training. </p><p> The main goal for this Bystander Training session was to have the girls interact with one another and with students from Emory & Henry to understand the steps needed directly or indirectly to intervene with bullying. TechGYRLS were talkative, bright, and full of energy! It was fantastic to have Emory & Henry students interact with local communities surrounding the campus, especially with the YWCA who focuses on eliminating racism and empowering women. <h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Microplastic Contamination in Virginia’s Holston River</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p><picture class="lw_image lw_image6314 lw_align_left"><source type="image/webp" srcset="/live/image/gid/11/width/389/height/520/6314_Rafe.rev.1556030202.webp 1x" data-origin="responsive"/><source type="image/png" srcset="/live/image/gid/11/width/389/height/520/6314_Rafe.rev.1556030202.png 1x" data-origin="responsive"/><img width="389" height="520" alt="Rafe Hagee" src="/live/image/gid/11/width/389/height/520/6314_Rafe.rev.1556030202.png" data-max-w="389" data-max-h="520" loading="lazy" data-optimized="true"/></picture>Rafe Hagee (E&H ’19) completed an Honor’s thesis studying microplastic contamination in Virginia’s Holston River. Rafe’s study focused on determining if microplastics were contaminating the three forks of the Holston River in Southwest Virginia. In order to assess contamination, he used plankton nets to collect microplastic particles. The nets were then processed in the lab to isolate the plastic particles for analysis. Additional analysis was done using Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and the results were compared to a reference film to ensure identification of the plastic particles.</p></div>
<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Effectiveness of Manual Therapy in Reducing Pain in Musculoskeletal Injuries</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> Athletic Training student <strong>Lauren Blakey ’17</strong>, looked at manual therapy to see if it is an effective method of treatment for musculoskeletal injuries. </p></div>
<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">The Role of Workplace Spirituality in Faculty and Staff Organizational Commitment, Occupational Stress, and Satisfaction with Life</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p><picture><img width="494" height="371" alt="Alan Berry" src="https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1888_IMG_3674.jpg" class="lw_image lw_image1888 lw_align_left" srcset="https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/scale/2x/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1888_IMG_3674.jpg 2x, https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/scale/3x/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1888_IMG_3674.jpg 3x" data-max-w="3200" data-max-h="2400" loading="lazy"/></picture></p><p> Alan Berry ’17 examined spirituality in the workplace, with spirituality in this case being defined as a sense of connectedness, belonging, and fulfillment rather than a belief in religion. Alan set out to examine how much workplace spirituality plays a role in staff and faculty satisfaction at a small liberal arts college. Results were similar to previous studies analyzing similar factors of the workplace. Inner life in particular, which measures a person’s hopefulness, awareness of personal values, and concern for spiritual values, seemed to be a common predictor of commitment and happiness. Findings suggest that if employees feel more aligned with the organization’s values, they are more committed and experience less occupational stress. </p></div>

<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">The Politics of Supreme Court Appointments Reconsidered</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> Political science–history major <strong>Carlie Fugleman ’11</strong> provided a critique of commonly used models for explaining the role of political and ideological considerations in Senators’ approach to advising and consenting to nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. In her undergraduate honors thesis, Carlie demonstrated why the standard models fail to capture key elements of the political maneuvering that surrounds Supreme Court nominations. Carlie plans to enroll in a Ph.D. program in public law and American politics.</p></div>
<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Portrait of a Tipping Point: Karl Marx and Capitalism in Crisis</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> In his senior honors thesis, <strong>Zachary McKenney ’10</strong>, a political science and sociology double major, explores Karl Marx’s account of the collapse of capitalist economies. He shows that even though the fall of communist countries in eastern Europe in the late 1980s was widely taken to be “proof” that Marx’s economic predictions were false, the 2008 economic crisis was actually caused by critical failures of the capital market systems that Marx anticipated long ago. He argues that Marx’s predictions were in fact very accurate and offers some thoughts on why Marx’s economic predictions can be prescient even if his political conclusions have proven to be problematic. Zak is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in political theory.</p></div>
<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">The Role of Parental Divorce in Attachment Patterns and Academic Dishonesty Among College Students</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p><picture><img width="494" height="371" alt="Hannah Doss" src="https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1890_IMG_7942.jpg" class="lw_image lw_image1890 lw_align_left" srcset="https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/scale/2x/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1890_IMG_7942.jpg 2x, https://www.emoryhenry.edu/live/image/scale/3x/gid/9/width/494/height/371/1890_IMG_7942.jpg 3x" data-max-w="3200" data-max-h="2400" loading="lazy"/></picture></p><p> Hannah Doss ’17 studied how parental divorce and interpersonal relationships may play a role in college students’ academic dishonesty.</p><p> Research has shown that parental divorce often has a negative influence on attachment patterns in children. Moreover, the attachment patterns developed in childhood often continue to affect relationships in adulthood (Bookwala & Zdaniuk, 1998).</p><p> More recently, research has been found that parental divorce plays a role in students’ academic performance (Storksen, Roysamb, Holmen, & Tambs, 2006). As adolescents, the supervision and parental control that a child experiences has a long-term affect that extends into adulthood (Devore & Ginsburg, 2005). Research has shown that children whose parents have divorced are more likely to experience decreased supervision or receive less attention than children from non-divorced families (Hawkins & Fackrell, 2009).</p><p> The purpose of this study was to look at the potential role that parental divorce and interpersonal relationships may have on academic dishonesty. It also examined college students’ perceptions of parenting styles and compares them to disciplinary practices parents used when the students were children. I hypothesized that parental divorce will play a role in attachment patterns in young adults, which in turn will affect students’ participation in academically dishonest behavior.</p></div>

Through pre and post exercise tests and blood work, her work observed that aged horses remained just as fit as the younger horses in the College’s riding program. Mandy was able to present her results at Ampersand Day. </p></div>

<h4 class="lw_blurbs_title">Facilitation of Blood Pressure Recovery: Difference Between Classical and Preferred Music Selections</h4><div class="lw_blurbs_body"><p> Classical music, particularly Pachebel’s “Cannon in D major,” has been shown to have a calming effect on persons facing cognitive stressors. Psychology student <strong>Lewis Chong</strong> investigated whether other classical music had the same effect and if a person’s musical preference played on blood pressure recovery.</p></div>
